Finn
The door opened and Dr. Boyle stepped inside, holding a clipboard to his chest. He met my eyes and smiled warmly.
What did that mean? Did his smile mean everything was okay? Or was it a smile full of pity because he was about to drop the worst news of my life on my head? Maybe I had cancer and I was dying. The pregnancy tests had given a false positive, but it was actually a tumor instead of a baby. Oh, God.
Or maybe it was a smile full of humor and amusement, because the half dozen pregnancy tests I’d bought had all been expired or something and in reality, I wasn’t pregnant at all. Now that was even scarier than cancer in some ways. If I wasn’t pregnant, what reason would Vaughn have to stay in Orchard Ridge? He’d just roll his eyes at me, unclasp his hand from mine, and run off to do his own thing. And probably breathe a huge sigh of relief, even though he’d assured me that he wanted the baby and was happy about it.
My heart slammed in my chest as I waited to hear my fate. Vaughn sat next to me on the examination table, gripping my hand tightly in his own. He wore a tense, nervous expression on his face that seemed to mirror my own.
Did he secretly wish that this was all a mistake? That the tests had been wrong? That he could wash his hands of this whole debacle and walk away, guilt-free?
Dr. Boyle took his seat in a black office chair across from us. “Well, congratulations. The pee test confirms it, Finn. You’re pregnant.”
I closed my eyes as relief washed over me. “Oh, thank God. And uh… everything’s okay, then? I don’t have cancer?”
The doctor’s jet black eyebrow quirked up. “What makes you think you might have cancer?”
I swallowed. “Oh, um, I dunno…”
“Anxiety,” Vaughn interjected with a chuckle.
Dr. Boyle laughed. “Oh, right. Well, no, I don’t see any signs of cancer.” He glanced over the papers in the clipboard. “Looks to me like you’re perfectly healthy. Now, of course, this is the very early stages of pregnancy, so things are a little fragile right now.”
“Fragile? You mean like I might miscarry or something?”
I glanced at Vaughn. A shadow had fallen over his face, and his eyes were wide and glossy with fear.
Seeing him this concerned eased my worries a bit. He seemed to be just as concerned about the state of my pregnancy as I was, and that was a good thing, I hoped. I couldn’t seem to shake the worry that he was just sitting here beside me and being with me through all of this because he didn’t want to come across as a dick. He had to be supportive, he had to be involved, he had to change his life around to fit me and the baby… because he had to. Because it was the right, noble thing to do.
But not because it was what he truly wanted, deep in his heart.
